Trump Claims Iran Wants Strait of Hormuz Closed to Save Face
In his remarks, Trump argued that Iran has no real interest in shutting the vital shipping route, claiming it would harm its own economy by cutting off major daily revenues from energy exports. He said Iran “only say they want it closed” because, in his words, the US has already imposed severe pressure, adding that the move is meant to preserve political image.
Trump also suggested that individuals had recently approached him saying Iran was seeking to reopen the Strait immediately. However, he warned that doing so under current conditions could jeopardize any potential agreement, using highly confrontational language regarding Iran’s leadership.
His comments came shortly after he announced that the United States would extend its ceasefire with Iran to allow time for Tehran to prepare what he described as a “unified proposal,” following a request from Pakistani officials involved in mediation efforts.
Pakistan had previously hosted US–Iran discussions in mid-April after helping broker a short-term ceasefire earlier in the month. That arrangement was set to expire on Wednesday evening in Washington time.
Diplomatic efforts for further negotiations are ongoing, although uncertainty remains about the next stage of talks.
In a separate post, Trump also claimed that Iran’s economy is under severe strain, stating that the country is “collapsing financially” and “starving for cash,” while reiterating his position on the Strait of Hormuz.
