Nigeria Tightens Broadcast Rules Ahead of 2027 Elections
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) issued a notice stating that presenters must refrain from expressing personal opinions as facts, intimidating guests, or broadcasting material deemed divisive. It also pointed to a “sustained increase” in violations of existing broadcasting standards across news and political programming.
According to the regulator, the goal is to ensure that the media does not contribute to misinformation or escalating political conflict during the electoral period. It emphasized that broadcast platforms should maintain neutrality and provide fair representation of differing views.
Under the updated enforcement framework, violations classified as “Class B breaches” include issues such as hate speech, misinformation, and failure to ensure balanced discussion. Sanctions may range from written warnings to reduced broadcasting time and financial penalties for both public and commercial stations.
The NBC also reiterated that rules introduced in previous years already prohibit biased presentation, denial of opposing viewpoints, and inflammatory political commentary. However, it stated that compliance will now be monitored more strictly in the lead-up to the election cycle.
