Iran Drone Hits Kuwaiti Oil Tanker Anchored at Dubai Port

(MENAFN) Kuwait Petroleum Corporation confirmed Tuesday that a giant Kuwaiti crude oil tanker, Al Salmi, was struck by an Iranian drone in the early hours of the morning while anchored at Dubai Port in the United Arab Emirates.

The attack took place at 12:10 a.m. local time (2010GMT Monday), with the vessel carrying a full cargo of crude oil at the time of the strike, the corporation stated.

According to a statement carried by media, the assault inflicted structural damage to the tanker's hull and ignited a fire onboard. Kuwait Petroleum subsequently raised the alarm over a potential oil leak into adjacent waters.

Dubai's Media Office reported no casualties, confirming all 24 crew members aboard had been accounted for and were unharmed. Dubai authorities stated that response teams "successfully contained the incident," and that no oil spill had been detected — an update that followed Kuwait Petroleum's earlier leak warning.

The strike sent immediate shockwaves through energy markets. Oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) surged more than 3% in the wake of the news, reaching $106.05 a barrel at 2337GMT. Brent crude climbed 2.57% to $115.35 a barrel at 2306GMT.

The attack marks the latest flashpoint in a rapidly escalating regional conflict triggered when Israel and the US launched a joint offensive against Iran on Feb. 28 — a campaign that has claimed more than 1,340 lives, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has since unleashed relentless retaliatory drone and missile strikes across the region, targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations that host US military forces — sowing casualties, crippling infrastructure, rattling global markets, and throwing international aviation into sustained disarray.
