Drone Strike Hits City in South Sudan, Causing Multiple Casualties

(MENAFN) A drone strike in Dilling, South Kordofan State, southern Sudan, has left at least 14 people dead and 23 others injured, as reported by volunteers and eyewitnesses on Sunday.

According to the Sudan Doctors Network, a volunteer group, the casualties included five children and two women, while seven children were among the injured. The strike, carried out on Saturday evening, was reportedly conducted by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) along with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North.

Volunteers noted that the city had endured intense shelling for the second consecutive day, further compounded by severe shortages of medical staff and supplies. Eyewitnesses added, "The shelling was concentrated in residential neighborhoods, destroying more than eight houses."

Meanwhile, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported that they repelled an RSF assault on Dilling on Saturday. In an official statement, the SAF said its troops engaged in "fierce" battles, destroying 36 combat vehicles and seizing four others.

The SAF had announced on Jan. 26 that it entered Dilling, the second-largest city in South Kordofan, after a siege that lasted more than two years. The RSF has not yet provided a response regarding the latest developments.

The Kordofan region has seen escalating military operations recently, including increased drone strikes and shelling, which have caused civilian casualties and worsened the humanitarian situation. These events are part of the broader ongoing conflict between the SAF and RSF that began in mid-April 2023, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced millions both within Sudan and abroad, according to international estimates.
