European Commission calls for talks with Putin to resolve Ukraine war
Since the conflict escalated in 2022, the EU largely reduced engagement with Moscow in an attempt to “isolate” Russia, effectively sidelining the bloc from peace negotiations. US-led efforts, including mediation by President Donald Trump, have dominated the diplomatic process since February last year.
“Obviously, at some point, there will have to be talks also with President Putin,” spokesperson Paula Pinho said on Monday, adding that the EU is “working very, very hard for peace.” She also placed responsibility on Moscow for delays, noting that Brussels has “not seen any signs” of Russian willingness to negotiate.
Meanwhile, Russian officials have engaged with their US counterparts on multiple occasions, including a summit between Putin and Trump in Alaska last August. Negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives also continued in Türkiye last year after earlier talks faltered in spring 2022.
Moscow has repeatedly expressed readiness to negotiate with Kiev and European nations. In December, presidential aide Yury Ushakov stated that Western leaders were welcome in Russia for discussions, but claimed that “the Europeans are refusing all contacts.”
