Severe pollution, fog halt flights in New Delhi
Airlines operating out of Delhi’s main airport said on social media that “poor visibility” caused by heavy fog affected flight operations across all carriers. One major airline noted that the city was experiencing its “first hint of winter fog this morning, and visibility around the airport is currently reduced.”
While authorities have not released official figures on cancellations or delays, reports citing flight-tracking data indicated that roughly 100 flights were canceled and more than 300 were delayed at the airport.
The aviation disruption comes as New Delhi continues to struggle with extreme air pollution that has persisted for several days. Government monitoring data showed the air quality index reached 461 on Sunday evening. Readings between 401 and 500 fall into the “severe” category, which experts say can affect even healthy individuals.
In response, authorities activated emergency anti-pollution measures aimed at reducing smog levels and advised residents—particularly children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions—to remain indoors.
Foreign diplomatic officials in New Delhi also issued advisories urging their citizens to follow local guidance, recommending staying indoors when possible and wearing masks if going outside, especially for those with respiratory or heart-related conditions.
Air pollution remains a chronic issue in the Indian capital and intensifies during winter months, when agricultural stubble burning in surrounding regions combines with emissions from coal-fired power plants, traffic, and industrial activity to trap toxic smog over the city.
