Israel plans new settler homes in central West Bank— Jerusalem Province

(MENAFN) Palestinian authorities in Jerusalem on Monday expressed strong concern over what they described as a “dangerous” initiative by Israel to build 9,000 settler homes in the central West Bank. Officials warned that the project targets lands around Jerusalem International Airport and adjacent areas, posing a “direct threat to geographical and demographic links between Jerusalem and the city of Ramallah.”

The plan envisions establishing nearly 9,000 housing units in heavily populated Palestinian neighborhoods, including Kafr Aqab, Qalandia, Al-Ram, Beit Hanina, and Bir Nabala. According to reports, Palestinian authorities view the project as a move that entrenches separation and isolation, thereby undermining any potential political path based on a two-state solution.

Israeli authorities are set to discuss advancing the initiative at a committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday, with potential plans to designate certain areas for construction. Recent financial actions, including a request to transfer 16 million shekels (approximately $5 million) for the alleged rehabilitation of polluted lands near Jerusalem International Airport, are interpreted by Palestinian officials as steps accelerating the settlement effort.

Officials cautioned that implementing the project would result in a settlement enclave effectively isolating northern Jerusalem from its surrounding Palestinian neighborhoods.

Reports also noted that last November, Israeli authorities seized 2,800 dunams of West Bank land through squatting, expropriation orders, and adjustments to state land boundaries.

The international community has consistently maintained that Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories violate international law and obstruct the prospects of a two-state solution. In a landmark ruling last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land illegal and called for the removal of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
