Japan Orbits New Experimental Satellite
JAXA explained that the spacecraft, known as Satellite-4 or RAISE-4, lifted off on Sunday aboard an Electron launch vehicle operated by the US company Rocket Lab. The launch took place from the firm’s Complex 1 spaceport located in New Zealand.
The project was the result of a collaborative effort involving private-sector firms, academic institutions, and scientific research organizations from across Japan, reflecting a broad national partnership in space innovation.
“This dedicated mission delivered precision and reliability for one of the world’s most respected space agencies, and we couldn’t be prouder of supporting JAXA with the dedicated access to space needed to support the growth of Japan’s aerospace economy,” said Peter Beck, Rocket Lab founder and CEO.
In earlier years, similar experimental satellites were deployed using Japan’s compact Epsilon launch vehicles; however, that rocket program experienced a failure in 2023.
