China Reveals Preliminary Results for Legislative Assembly
The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election of Macao SAR released the outcomes early Monday, according to a news agency.
The polls were conducted on Sunday.
The newly formed legislature of the Macao SAR consists of 33 members in total, with 14 directly elected, 12 indirectly elected, and seven appointed by the Macao SAR chief executive.
Those appointed members will be selected by the chief executive within 15 days after receiving the conclusive election results.
The Legislative Assembly functions as the lawmaking institution of Macao SAR, and all members must be permanent residents. Each term in the assembly spans four years, except for the first term, which follows different rules.
In 2024, Macao SAR amended its Legislative Assembly Election Law to reinforce the vetting process for candidates, in line with the principle of "patriots administering Macao" within the legal framework.
