Magnitude 7.4 Quake Jolts Russia’s Far East
(MENAFN) A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 rocked Russia's far east early Saturday at 6:37 AM local time (0237 GMT), as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey.
The tremor’s epicenter was located off the coast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative hub of Kamchatka Krai, at a depth of 39.5 kilometers (24.5 miles).
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has raised alarms, warning of the potential for "hazardous" tsunami waves along coastal areas within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is home to significant military installations, including the Russian Navy's Rybachiy submarine base and the Yelizovo airbase for the air force.
At this stage, no casualties or damage have been reported.
In response to the seismic event, Russian authorities have issued a tsunami warning for the Kamchatka coastline, activating emergency services and urging locals to avoid areas vulnerable to tsunamis, particularly beaches.
This follows a major earthquake that struck the same region on July 30, when an 8.8 magnitude tremor set off more than 100 aftershocks exceeding magnitude 5.0.
