Qatar Pursues Legal Action Against Israel Following Airstrike
(MENAFN) Qatar announced Thursday it has initiated legal proceedings in response to what it described as an Israeli assault on its territory, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the Gulf state and Tel Aviv.
Addressing the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council Strategic Dialogue in Sochi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi declared that Doha "has started taking all necessary legal measures against the Israeli aggression."
Al-Muraikhi denounced the Israeli strike as an act of aggression that resulted in civilian casualties and breached international standards. He reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to advancing justice and upholding international principles that safeguard the right of nations to self-determination and human dignity.
The minister sharply criticized Israel’s leadership, placing direct blame on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for fueling instability across the Middle East. Israel’s conduct “reflects arrogance and recklessness and undermines efforts to resolve disputes peacefully,” he said.
His comments come just one day after Qatar sent a formal complaint to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Sangjin Kim, South Korea’s acting UN envoy and current Security Council chair, denouncing the Israeli strike in Doha as a “cowardly” and “criminal act” that breached international law.
A Security Council meeting to address the incident, initially scheduled for Wednesday, was delayed at Doha’s request to ensure Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani could attend. The session—pushed to Thursday—was originally convened by Algeria and Pakistan.
Qatar had already issued a strong condemnation Tuesday, describing the Israeli action as a “blatant violation of international law” and a direct threat to its national sovereignty and security.
The Gulf nation has played a central role in brokering ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, amid Tel Aviv’s continuing military campaign in Gaza that has left over 64,700 people dead since October 2023.
While Hamas confirmed that five of its members were killed in the Israeli strike, the group’s leadership reportedly survived.
