Trump states US will be profiting from arms sales to European NATO members
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the United States has stopped directly funding Ukraine, instead earning revenue by selling arms to European NATO allies, who then supply the weapons to Kiev.
Trump criticized previous US administrations for allegedly “fleecing” the country, citing $350 billion committed to Ukraine. He remarked that he did not blame Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him “the greatest salesman I think I’ve ever met.”
“We don’t pay any money to Ukraine anymore. In fact, it’s the opposite. They request through NATO. We deal with NATO. We don’t deal really with Ukraine,” Trump said, adding that NATO pays the US in full and then decides how to distribute the weapons.
The president also emphasized that Washington would only provide a supporting role in any security guarantees for Kiev, urging European nations to take the lead. Zelensky and his European backers have requested “Article 5-like guarantees” obligating collective response if Ukraine were attacked. Reportedly, Kiev has sought $100 billion from these allies to acquire US-made weapons.
Moscow has repeatedly criticized Western arms shipments to Ukraine, warning that they prolong the conflict and risk drawing NATO directly into hostilities.
