Washington seeks nuclear weapons agreement with Russia, China

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated that Washington aims to negotiate a nuclear arms reduction agreement with Russia and China, revealing that he discussed denuclearization with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their recent Alaska summit.

“We would like to denuclearize. It’s too much power, and we talked about that also,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that Putin expressed interest in the initiative.

Trump described the summit as productive, noting that discussions included missile systems and nuclear limitations. “It was a very successful day for other things, because, you know, we’re also talking about missiles, nuclear, we’re talking about a lot of different things. We’re talking about limiting nuclear, we’ll get China into that. We have the most, Russia has the second most, and China has third. But China is way behind, but they’ll catch us in five years,” he said.

It remains unclear what data Trump used to assess the nuclear capabilities of the three nations. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia currently has about 2,591 warheads in storage and 1,718 deployed, while the US possesses 1,930 in storage and 1,770 deployed. China is estimated to have around 576 warheads, with only 24 deployed, whereas the UK and France have 120 and 280 deployed warheads, respectively.

Trump also mentioned that he has continued discussions with Putin following the August 15 Alaska summit.
