Harsh Weather Cripples Rescue of Russian Climber Trapped on Kyrgyz Peak
(MENAFN) Russian mountaineer Natalia Nagovitsyna remains trapped on Victory Peak, a towering 24,406-foot (7,439-meter) summit in Kyrgyzstan, after rescue operations were suspended due to severe weather conditions. Her son shared drone footage showing her waving and urgently appealed for help, convinced she is still alive.
The 47-year-old climber suffered a broken leg on August 12 while descending Victory Peak, one of the highest mountains in the region. Since then, multiple rescue missions have been launched, but extreme weather has thwarted efforts. During a second rescue attempt, Nagovitsyna’s friend Luca Sinigaglia died, and his body could not be retrieved.
Search operations were called off last Friday, with a final rescue planned for Tuesday canceled as freezing temperatures plunged to minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit). With helicopters forced to return to base, authorities have said Nagovitsyna’s remains would not be recovered until spring, according to media reports.
Her son’s drone footage captured her presence on the mountain, prompting a plea for the Russian Foreign Ministry to intensify rescue efforts. Despite the grave conditions, he remains hopeful, sharing the video and urging assistance.
