Iran, European Powers Set to Revive Nuclear Talks in Geneva
The diplomatic meeting will involve deputy foreign ministers, the news agency cited Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei as confirming Monday.
Talks will focus on Iran's insistence on lifting sanctions and revisiting UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which formally endorsed the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and global powers. The discussions are also expected to address the broader future of the accord.
This development follows a phone conversation last Friday between Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his counterparts from the E3—France, Britain, and Germany—along with the European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
Diplomatic engagement between Iran and the E3 has intensified since September, with multiple negotiation rounds tackling Tehran’s nuclear activities and sanctions relief. The latest round occurred in Istanbul, Türkiye, in late July.
Tensions have escalated in recent months, with European states threatening to invoke the snapback mechanism, a provision in the 2015 deal that permits the re-imposition of international sanctions if Iran is found to be in breach of the agreement.
