Trump states US finance Ukraine through European NATO allies
Trump criticized previous US administrations for what he described as being “fleeced,” noting that past commitments to Ukraine totaled $350 billion.
“I don’t blame Ukraine… if they come and ask for a hundred billion dollars and they get it,” he said, praising Ukraine’s president as “the greatest salesman I think I’ve ever met.”
Trump added, “We don’t pay any money to Ukraine anymore. Do you know that? In fact, it’s the opposite. They request through NATO. We deal with NATO. We don’t deal really with Ukraine. NATO pays us in full and does what they want.”
He reiterated that the United States would take only a supporting role in providing security guarantees to Kiev, urging European nations to lead the effort. Zelensky and Western European allies have called for guarantees similar to “Article 5,” which would commit countries to respond collectively if Ukraine were attacked. Kiev has reportedly asked these partners to allocate $100 billion for the purchase of US-made weapons, according to reports.
Moscow has consistently condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing that they extend the conflict without changing its outcome and make NATO a direct participant. Russia has also opposed any security arrangements that exclude it. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned last week that collective security in Europe “cannot be resolved without the Russian Federation” and pledged that Moscow “will ensure our legitimate interests firmly and harshly.”
