Yemen’s president discusses efforts to revive paused peace process with UN envoy

(MENAFN) Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council head, Rashad al-Alimi, met on Wednesday with UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg in Riyadh to discuss ways to revive the stalled peace process in the country.

The discussions centered on ongoing international diplomatic initiatives aimed at restarting negotiations in Yemen, which has been plagued by years of conflict, according to reports.

Al-Alimi highlighted the significance of Grundberg’s prior briefing to the UN Security Council, particularly on issues such as de-escalation measures, economic improvements, and the release of UN and other international staff held by the Houthi group.

The Yemeni leader reiterated his government’s backing for UN-led efforts to achieve lasting peace in the war-affected nation.

Grundberg’s office noted that the two officials also addressed “the urgent need to address the deteriorating living conditions for Yemenis and to make progress toward a political agreement that opens a path toward a just and sustainable peace.”

The UN envoy acknowledged recent initiatives by the Yemeni government and the Central Bank in Aden, particularly measures supporting the recent appreciation of the national currency.
